Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata, the legendary industrialist was born on July 24", 1904. His father was a first cousin of Jamsedji Tata, a pioneer industrialist in India. 'Jeh', or 'JRD' as he was commonly known, came to be regarded as the most famous industrial pioneer in modern India.
Achievements :
J.R.D Tata was the founder of the civil aviation of India. He was given the first pilot license issued in India. He had founded India's first commercial airline called Tata Airlines, however, Tata Airlines was renamed Air India which is now India's national airline service. His companies like Tata Steel, TELC0 and Taj group of hotels have been household names in India. In his career he never resorted to bribery and corruption. Though he wished to join Cambridge University in his youth and study engineering, his father having different intentions of having him heir the Tata organization, JRD didn't go to Cambridge. Under JR D's Chairmanship, the number of companies in the Tata Group grew from 15 to over 100. Monetarily, the assets of Tata group grew from Rs. 620 million to over Rs. 100 billion.
Awards and Recogmition:
He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1957 and was also awarded India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna in 1992 for his service in industry and nation building. He was also bestowed with the United Nations Population Award for his crusading endeavors towards initiating and successfully implementing the family planning.
Death :
JRD Tata died at the age of 89 in 1993. He was buried at Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
