VOTER APATHY IN INDIA

 It's quite a common place or occurrence to take note of the stray report or tidbit, be-moaning low voter turnouts like 30-40 per cent, for elections of even considerable magnitude. This voter apathy. to me, has been something so dangerous, that is has afflicted more, and brought about more precarious conditions, than even the presently ravaging Covid-19

 India is a sovereign democracy, we all declare pompously. My goodness, what an eyesore. Even better, we firmly reiterate that this is a democracy. 'for the people, of the people and by the people'. Just how ludicrous can it get? This pathetic, pitiful statement would more aptly reflect India's so- called 'democracy', if the word 'people', were to be obliterated from it. Yes, India is a democratic, but as per some merely a meaningless, ineffective and a corrupt one.

 Democracy is not just about the right to elect our leaders, it is quintessentially the involvement of people, fundamental to its success, and necessary for its implementation. And, my word, aren't we Indians involved? With glorious voter turnouts of barely 35%, we really do pack in to vote for the right sort of government. To us, it matters not a whiff whether a sound, capable or normal, dynamic leader is elected, to bring a semblance of order to this chaotic nation, or if a blood-thirsty, corrupt, perverse, hoodlum is elected, to continue our nation's incredible downward descent into absolute mayhem and oblivion.

 The archetypal Indian mindset, to vote for a so-and-so budding candidate, because 'his father's daughter's aunt comes from mny hometown', is a very strong vote bank, for politics, people who are well past their sell-by date. Do you think this nation votes on credit, merit, ability, confidence, or any other rational, logical reason? If you still do, then you're sadly demented, the reality obscured by your clouded vision of this nation's helpless antics.

 Many of us often whine about the declining state of our country, caught in the ravage of the whims and fancies of the men who hold like a vice-like group on its frayed reins, but just how many of us actually do something to bring out a paradigm shift in the current state of affairs. All of us, over 18, of course do hold within us the ability, to excuse change, a small, minor, and yet somehow a significant one, by simply casting a vote, to bring the power, the people who will take the best care possible of the nation's resources. However, we're all too lazy, too unconcerned to make some real effort, to brins about order in to the administration of our country.

 Such listless voters' apathy is bestowing great 'favour' on our nation, which can get no deeper into the doldrums. The harrowing thing here is that this lack of conscientious voter interest, had led to a severely crippling effect on the everyday running of our vast country. The consequent corruption, that is now considered to be prevalent in every sector of Indian life, is now such a common place and in fact essential part of our lives, that to us it is no more of a deterrent than an ordinary house-fly. The thought of our 'sterling' government administration, with its magnificent corruption, and its invincible aura of real progress whatsoever, brings to my mind certain humorous, and yet telling anecdotes, out the fallacies of Indian bureaucrats. On one occasion, a man remarked to his friend, "That officer is honest he will accept what you give and will do your work properly." Indeed, the epitome of honesty! Another instance saw, an advisor suggesting to the minister-in-charge, "This is a very important post. Hence, we cannot appoint this official, as he is too honest for the job." Quite truly, a mere light depiction of the wayward ways of our god-forsaken democracy."

 The country is a state of steady nonetheless assured decline, unless we take some definite steps to arrest this freefall. 'India Shining' campaigns a political party, but the truth is quite the opposite.

 Forget India's under-belly, its very heart is riddled with malfunctions and a scenario of apathy- induced disorder. Not only must we urgently take up to the cudgel to vote, but we must also do so sensibly, and not fall prey to derisive ploys such as the much-tried 'son-of-the-sall' soap opera. Such ingenious and hopeless, devious methods to gain a few cheap votes, is nothing but an outrageous ploy, to herd people's opinions like cattle, and such mentally-deluded political parties play along such ridiculous and ludicrous ideologies, to a fewer pitch, not in throes of idealism, but merely to sway public opinion, and to bring them firmly into the public eye.

 In fact, such incidents raise the valid question, how do such senile parties even manage to accrue votes in an election? This can only be possible if the voters themselves vote in a manner detrimental to the best interests of India. Thus, it is quite clearly evident that in order to significantly alter and improve our country's administration, we must proactively vote and do so in a manner, that can lead to a widespread officiency and transparency in our Indian government. That day is still a long way off, but we must take heart, and rebuild our nation back to its days of glory and bliss, for only then will India turn into a true and effective superpower. The power, to do so, of course, lies with us!
